TIP 1: BREAK DOWN YOUR BUDGET
"Whether you’re renovating for profit or to stay in your home, your budget should be a primary driver for all renovators, new and old.
The first step is to have a detailed list of the costs that will be incurred during your renovation. Ideally this would be broken down, element by element. For example, rather than one element being demolition, have this broken down into: labour for demolition, rubbish removal, site clean up, disposal of hazardous materials (if applicable), etc.
Breaking the budget down will allow you to better determine – as you progress through the project – how well you are tracking and if you are on target to make budget."

Research your builder and/or their company and ensure that they’re licensed. Once that’s done and and you’re comfortable with your choice, you can sign a contract.
