We are truly a lucky bunch to be living in such a beautiful city. Whether it's catching some waves, leisurely weekend strolls through markets, coffee catch-ups or the ritualistic Friday arvo drinks, Perth folks are spoiled for choices.
But aside from the popular options of Scarborough/Cottesloe beaches, Freo markets and coffee strips in the inner Western suburbs, what are some of the lesser-known spots in Perth?
1) Leighton Beach - North Fremantle
Leighton Beach is located just north of Fremantle and a 20-minute drive from Perth's CBD. A gorgeous white sandy beach and sparkling turquoise waters, Leighton Beach is less crowded than Cottesloe/Scarborough on most days - and has a chilled out, laidback vibe that we all love about Freo.
Tip: Grab a coffee or brekkie from the painfully hip Bib & Tucker, owned by retired Olympic swimmer Eamon Sullivan. During the warmer months, grab a table on their outdoor patio, which overlooks the Indian Ocean.
2) Cafe strip on Maylands
Move aside Beaufort St - we have a new strip of excellent cafes and restaurants in Maylands. While not as prolific as its predecessors, there are some much raved-about spots for brekkie, lunch and high tea including Mrs S, Sherbet Cafe & Bake Shop and Chapels on Whatley (picture above).
Tip: Check out the gorgeous Asian art antiquity and pieces on display AND for sale at Chapels on Whatley - from homewares to fine tea and everything in between. All handpicked from across Asia.
3) Perth's growing food truck scene
While still in its infant days, Perth's food trucks are currently undergoing a 3-month trial period (Feb to May 2015) in areas like Perth's Cultural Centre, Langley Park, Havelock Street in West Perth, Queen's Gardens and the James Street car park (ref: ABC News). Most of these food trucks operate by word of mouth and social media - or you can trace their whereabouts from this website: Where the Truck At.
Tip: Track down Comida do Sul Brazillian food truck. Be sure to grab a Choripán – Argentinian-style hot dog made of chorizo, homemade mayo, vinaigrette (tomato salsa) and chimi churri in a bun - and wash it down with a fresh coconut. The perfect summer snack. Other notable mentions include Merrywell's Food Truck, Jumplings Tasty Dumplings, Delish Ice, and Eat no Evil (Mexican & Thai).
